Golden House Gifts

Community is important to Haven. We try to give back to the community that supports us year round. Currently we are collecting donations for Golden House, a local shelter for domestic abuse victims.

Golden House offers many services besides just a live-in residency, which helps to positively impact the lives of many women, men, and children in our area. Safety and education about domestic violence abuse prevention are core staples in Golden House’s work.

The mission of Golden House is

To provide a dignified sanctuary, supportive intervention and advocacy services to victims of domestic violence within Brown County and the surrounding region. As a non-profit agency, Golden Hosue strives to eliminate domestic violence from our community by:

• Working cooperatively with other agencies and community resources.
• Providing shelter, crisis intervention, legal advocacy, support groups, and information and referral services.
• Educating our community regarding the prevalence, effects, and prevention of domestic violence.

Golden House is in need of many donations during this time. Among some of the things they are in greater need of include: new bath towels, laundry baskets, new Tupperware, and journals. For a complete list of wish-list items visit Golden House‘s website.

Best Blow Out Secrets

Alyssa Kolsky Hertzig, Contributing Executive Beauty Editor for Allure Magazine shares her Blow Out Tips in “Surprising Tricks for Making a Blow Out Last.” We agree with Hertzig and want to share our own beauty secrets so you can get the most out of your blowout.

Tip 1: 

Practice pre-emptive dry-shampooing: Don’t wait until a day or two after your blowout, when you’re already greasy, to take action. Hairstylist Theodore Leaf recently taught me to spritz a little dry shampoo at the roots immediately after a blow-dry. “Dry shampoo is my little insurance policy,” he says. “Put it on so it can soak up oil before it happens.”

Tip 2:

Sleep right: Eight hours of being smooshed on a pillow can murder your blowout. Beauty news editor Heather Muir preserves hers by sleeping with her hair twisted into two Princess-Leia-style buns. I like to pull mine into a low ponytail, secured with a loose scrunchie. (Don’t judge—they may not be cute, but they’re much less likely to leave dents than hair elastics.)

Haven: Make sure you don’t pull your hair back too tight or you will loose all the volume

Tip 3:

Protect it from the elements at all costs: Rain is your blowout’s mortal enemy so avoid it if you can. Editorial Assistant Catherine O’Neill even wears one of those old-school plastic bonnets: “I look like a grandma running through Manhattan, but there’s a reason Grandma’s hair always looked so good, right?”

Haven: Avoid the humidity. Use your umbrella. If your winter coat has a hood, put that bad boy on.

Tip 4:

Touch it up. Even the best blowouts usually require a few minutes of freshening each morning. If things start to look puffy, I pull out my blowdryer and round brush and perfect just the front and top sections. (I’m less worried about the underside—no one really sees it anyway.) If the blowout has started to get curly, I use a one-inch curling iron to add random looses waves all over my head. (The curling iron also helps to tamp down any frizz that has cropped up.) And if all else fails, I pull my hair back into a ponytail and flat iron just the ends, for an easy, sleek look.

Get Goldwell Glam

Yesterday, the stylists at Haven participated in a private, in-salon training session with Chris Hitchcock from Goldwell. The stylists refreshed their knowledge of the color line we use at Haven in addition to learning about Goldwell’s recent additions: New blondes and Cool browns.

“I love the shine, the wide range of colors, and the opportunities to create so many different looks that Goldwell provides” says Liza Thibodeau, master stylist at Haven.

During this training session the stylists learned how the New blonde color works to “break the base” of someone’s natural color to make their highlights pop even more.
